About the Process

Journey

I first started making pants 4 years ago. I distinctly remember getting more interested in pants due to the fact that I hated all my climbing pants, and it eventually evolved into being an obsession. I was annoyed by the cheap, stretchy material, fit and uninspiring silhouette. Things really started to change when I looked into women’s pants and started seeing all the flowy, less restrictive varieties of women’s pant silhouettes. However my pickiness and creativity led me to the point where I needed to make my own pants. The learning curve was tough. Pant patterns are not easy to understand and sewing was a lot more difficult than I thought, especially because I’m a perfectionist. The wobble stitch lines and inability to sew a curve frustrated me. My creative side forbade me from just following patterns that I could buy, which led to me trying to learn pattern making alongside sewing. After I graduated I began to invest my effort into pant making again. I worked on it fairly consistently for about 6 months, with a lot of trial and error, before I finally started to feel confident enough to sell my work. I started working full time on my brand in August 2024, and launched my first release In October of that same year. My aim for this brand is to allow myself to develop as a designer and to always push myself creatively.

Inspiration

My clothes are designed with a few key tenants in mind: sustainable, long lasting, unique and wearable. The beauty of clothing to me comes from the silhouette: how the cloth lays and interacts with the body. I like to imagine clothing as a form of sculpture and for that reason my emphasis is a lot more on shape, form and texture, rather than graphic elements, logos or even color. With my summer release I started playing with different construction techniques, moving/adding seams, and the introduction of pleats to create more dimensionality to my silhouettes, while still keeping my focus on the function and comfort of the garment when it’s being worn.

Process

I hand make every piece of clothing that I sell. It starts with tailoring my pattern to fit your measurements, and then I do the cut and sew process. I use an industrial single needle lock stitch sewing machine for the majority of all of my sewing, and I hand sew all of my buttonholes. Currently all of my pants and shorts take between 8-11 hours to cut and sew depending on the design. The jackets usually take 2 full days.

Materials

Buoyboy garments are always made with the highest quality materials. I source my denim from the most well regarded denim mills from across the world. I source the highest quality buttons and zippers to ensure my product lasts a long time. I always use 100% cotton denim because the garment holds up better, and is better for the environment than synthetics. I always try to be as transparent as possible in my craft. I divulge where I get my materials because I see that as a point of pride in my clothes, rather than something that should be hidden from my customers.
